Movie Review-Opus

Sometimes a major movie theatre chain surprises me and shows a smaller, more obscure film! The fact that Queensbury had four showings of the new horror/satire, "Opus" from A24, starring the always eccentric, John Malkovich was a surprise and I had to take advantage!

"Opus" is the feature length debut from Mark Anthony Green and not only does Malkovich co-star but you have Ayo Edebiri (from the hit TV show, "The Bear") & Academy Award nominee Juliette Lewis too! It's unfortunately a forgettable satire with some interesting ideas, but none are fleshed out that well. The film brings up topics like: celebrity worship, manipulation, the media and how they shape the public's perception of something or someone! The interesting fact that Mark Anthony Green was a journalist himself I was hoping for more on the manipulation of the media & how they worship celebrities but the film was all over the place and didn't go far enough in any direction it was taking us.

This isn't a bad time killer and it does have some good ideas, but misses the mark and you'll forget about it within a week despite another eccentric Malkovich performance.
